Who We Are

Courage is a membership-based socialist organization that believes the economy should be run by and for working people—not multimillionaire CEOs. We aim to bridge the divide between social movements and electoral politics. We are founded on the belief that elections can be important and consequential, and that the Left cannot afford to sit them out.
We are building a base in communities across the country, advocating for socialist policies, and organizing to advance them both within and outside the New Democratic Party.
With Avi Lewis as leader of the NDP, we aim to elect a socialist federal government to deliver massive gains for working people. But we also believe that simply electing an NDP government will not be enough to deliver economic and political transformation. We need a common front of thriving social movements, militant trade unions, and a democratized NDP to win fundamental change.
Our work includes:
- Running or supporting campaigns alongside and outside the NDP: organizing to win material improvements for Canada’s multi-racial working class
- Organizing for a socialist agenda within the party: coordinating people who share our values into an organized current or tendency; supporting people to get involved in the NDP and electing socialists into office; defending Avi Lewis when he’s attacked; and pushing him when necessary
- Doing socialist political education: collectively developing a clear analysis of capitalism and training the organizers we need to win a democratic majority for socialist transformation
Our values include:
- Democratic control of the economy
- An inclusive and caring society
- Climate justice
- International solidarity
- Decolonization and Indigenous self-determination
- Inclusive and asymmetrical federalism
